A group of Jews came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Abu al-Qasim, tell us about certain matters we will ask you about, which none but a prophet knows.” Among the things they asked him was, “What food did Israel forbid himself before the Torah was revealed?” He said, “I adjure you by Allah, who sent down the Torah to Moses: Do you know that Israel—Jacob, ﷺ —became gravely ill and his illness lasted a long time, so he made a vow to Allah that if Allah cured him of his illness, he would forbid himself his favorite drink and his favorite food? His favorite food was camel meat, and his favorite drink was camel milk.” They said, “O Allah, yes.”
