✧ I came to Madinah and met Abu Bakr b. Muhammad b. 'Amr b. Hazm, who was governor of Madinah. He said: 'A thief was brought to me, and my maternal aunt 'Amrah bint 'Abd al-Rahman sent word to me: "Do not be hasty in the matter of this man until I come to you and tell you what I heard from 'A'ishah concerning the matter of the thief." He said: 'So she came to me and told me that she heard 'A'ishah say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Cut off [the hand] for a quarter of a dinar, and do not cut off for less than that.' At that time, a quarter of a dinar was three dirhams, and a dinar was twelve dirhams." He said: 'His theft was less than a quarter of a dinar, so I did not cut off his hand.'
