حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ لَقِيطٍ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ قَالَ
دَخَلْتُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي سِتَّةِ نَفَرٍ أَوْ سَبْعَةٍ أَوْ ثَمَانِيَةٍ فَقَالَ لَنَا بَايِعُونِي فَقُلْنَا يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ قَدْ بَايَعْنَاكَ قَالَ بَايِعُونِي فَبَايَعْنَاهُ فَأَخَذَ عَلَيْنَا بِمَا أَخَذَ عَلَى النَّاسِ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَ ذَلِكَ كَلِمَةً خَفِيَّةً فَقَالَ لَا تَسْأَلُوا النَّاسَ شَيْئًا

✧ I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ with six, seven, or eight people. He said to us, 'Pledge allegiance to me.' We said, 'O Prophet of Allah, we have already pledged allegiance to you.' He said, 'Pledge allegiance to me.' So we pledged allegiance to him, and he took from us what he took from the people. Then he added after that a subtle word: 'Do not ask people for anything.'
