✧ When the people of apostasy apostatized in the time of Abu Bakr, 'Umar said, 'How can you fight the people, O Abu Bakr, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: there is no deity but Allah. And when they say: there is no deity but Allah, their blood and their property are protected from me except for its right, and their reckoning is with Allah"?' Abu Bakr said, 'By Allah, I will fight whoever separates between prayer and zakat, for zakat is the right of property. By Allah, if they withhold from me a young she-goat that they used to pay to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I will fight them over it.' 'Umar said, 'By Allah, it was only that I saw that Allah had opened Abu Bakr's chest for fighting, and I knew that it was the truth.'

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Among those who narrated it from him correctly are Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, Muḥammad b. al-Walīd al-Zubaydī, Yūnus, ʿUqayl, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khālid b. Musāfir, al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid, Sufyān b. Ḥusayn, Sulaymān b. Kathīr, Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, Jaʿfar b. Burqān and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd b. Tamīm. They narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUtbah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: ʿUmar said to Abū Bakr. There is disagreement about Sufyān b. Ḥusayn: Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Wāsiṭī narrated it from him as connected (musnad), from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh, from Abū Hurayrah, while Yazīd b. Hārūn narrated it as mursal, omitting Abū Hurayrah. Maʿmar b. Rāshid also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him: Rabāḥ b. Zayd narrated it as connected from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh, from Abū Hurayrah, in agreement with those mentioned before, but ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated it as mursal from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh, without mentioning Abū Hurayrah. ʿImrān al-Qaṭṭān narrated it from Maʿmar and said: from al-Zuhrī, from Anas b. Mālik, from Abū Bakr, and he erred in this regarding Maʿmar. Yaḥyā b. Abī Unaysah narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, and he also erred in mentioning Saʿīd. Ṣāliḥ b. Abī al-Akhḍar narrated it and said: from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd and Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Walīd b. Muslim narrated it from Shuʿayb, and Marzūq b. Abī al-Hudhayl and Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah, and he erred in this regarding Shuʿayb and Ibn ʿUyaynah, because Shuʿayb narrates it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh, from Abū Hurayrah, and Ibn ʿUyaynah narrates it from al-Zuhrī as mursal, mentioning no one above him. The first view is the correct one.

machine translationThe wording "ʿanāqan" (a young she-goat) is more sound (aṣaḥḥ), that is, than the narration of the one who narrated "ʿiqālan" (a camel's hobble) or left it unspecified.
