حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ الْخِيَارِ عَنِ الْمِقْدَادِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ

قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا ضَرَبَنِي بِالسَّيْفِ فَقَطَعَ يَدِي، ثُمَّ لَاذَ مِنِّي بِشَجَرَةٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، أَأَقْتُلُهُ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، فَعُدْتُ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا، فَقَالَ: لَا، إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ مِثْلَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقُولَ مَا قَالَ، وَيَكُونَ مِثْلَكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ مَا فَعَلْتَ

✧ I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of a man who struck me with a sword and cut off my hand, then took refuge from me behind a tree, then said, "There is no god but Allah"? Should I kill him?' He said, 'No.' I repeated it two or three times, and he said, 'No, unless you are like him before he says what he said, and he is like you before you do what you did.'

Murrah, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī b. al-Khiyār, from al-Miqdād; they did not mention ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd in it. There is disagreement about al-Walīd b. Muslim: Abū al-Walīd al-Qurashī narrated it from al-Walīd, from al-Awzāʿī and al-Layth b. Saʿd, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī, from al-Miqdād; he did not mention ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd and omitted Ibrāhīm b. Murrah. ʿĪsā b. Musāwir contradicted him and narrated it from al-Walīd, from al-Awzāʿī, from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī, from al-Miqdād; he did not mention Ibrāhīm b. Murrah in it, and put Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in the place of ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd. Al-Firyābī narrated it from al-Awzāʿī, from Ibrāhīm b. Murrah, from al-Zuhrī, as a mursal report from al-Miqdād. The correct one is the version of Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān and those who followed him.
