✧ He used to say: Tell me about a man who entered Paradise without ever praying. When people did not know him, they asked: Who is he? He would say: Uṣayrim of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, ʿAmr b. Thābit b. Waqsh. Al-Ḥuṣayn said: I said to Maḥmūd b. Labīd: What was the affair of al-Uṣayrim? He said: He refused Islam against his people. On the day of Uḥud, when the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to Uḥud, Islam appeared to him, so he accepted Islam, took his sword, and went until he came to the people. He entered among the ranks and fought until wounds disabled him. While the men of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal were searching for their slain in the battlefield, they came upon him and said: By God, this is al-Uṣayrim. What brought him? We left him while he rejected this matter. Ask him what brought him. They said: What brought you, O ʿAmr? Out of concern for your people or desire for Islam? He said: Rather desire for Islam. I believed in God and His Messenger and accepted Islam. Then I took my sword and went with the Messenger of God ﷺ and fought until what befell me befell me. Then he did not linger until he died in their hands. They mentioned him to the Messenger of God ﷺ, who said: He is one of the people of Paradise.
