حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ
أَنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ كَانَ أَمِيرًا عَلَى الْجَيْشِ الَّذِي غَزَا فِيهِ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ: إِذَا مُتُّ فَاقْرَؤُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ مِنِّي السَّلَامَ، فَأَخْبِرُوهُمْ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ مَاتَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا جَعَلَهُ اللهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَلْيَنْطَلِقُوا بِي فَلْيَبْعُدُوا بِي فِي أَرْضِ الرُّومِ مَا اسْتَطَاعُوا، فَحَدَّثَ النَّاسُ لَمَّا مَاتَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ، فَاسْتَلْأَمَ النَّاسُ وَانْطَلَقُوا بِجِنَازَتِهِ
Translation

✧ Yazid b. Mu'awiya was commander of the army in which Abu Ayyub participated. He entered upon him at the time of death. Abu Ayyub said to him: "When I die, convey my greetings of peace to the people, and inform them that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever dies without associating anything with Allah, Allah will place him in Paradise.' And let them go with me and carry me as far as they can into the land of the Romans." When Abu Ayyub died, the people were told, so they armed themselves and set out with his funeral.
