  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThere is disagreement over his name from ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib. Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd said, from him, from Ḥarb, thus. And it was said: Ḥarb, from his maternal uncle, a man from Banū Bakr b. Wāʾil, and he did not name him. And it was said: from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ḥarb, as a mursal report. And it was said: from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ḥarb b. ʿAbdullāh al-Thaqafī, from his grandfather Abū Umayyah; al-Thawrī narrated it. On this basis, "Umayyah" is a corruption of "his grandfather". The Companion of this hadith has remained unidentified. And Allah knows best.
