✧ Hudhayfah b. al-Yaman about the Prophet ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَسَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ جُمَيعٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الطُّفَيْلِ حَدَّثَنَا حُذَيْفَةُ بْنُ الْيَمَانِ قَالَ مَا مَنَعَنِي

أَنْ أَشْهَدَ بَدْرًا إِلَّا أَنِّي خَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَأَبِي حُسِيلٍ فَأَخَذَنَا كُفَّارُ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّكُمْتُرِيدُونَ مُحَمَّدًا؟ قُلْنَا مَا نُرِيدُهُ مَا نُرِيدُ إِلَّا الْمَدِينَةَ فَأَخَذُوا مِنَّا عَهْدَ اللهِ وَمِيثَاقَهُ لَنَنْصَرِفَنَّ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَلَا نُقَاتِلُ مَعَهُ فَأَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ الْخَبَرَ فَقَالَ انْصَرِفَا نَفِي لَهُمْ بِعَهْدِهِمْ وَنَسْتَعِينُ اللهَ عَلَيْهِمْ

✧ I would have witnessed Badr, except that I and my father Husayl went out and the disbelievers of Quraysh captured us. They said, 'You intend to join Muhammad?' We said, 'We do not intend him; we only intend Madinah.' So they took from us a covenant by God and His pledge that we would return to Madinah and not fight alongside him. Then we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him the news. He said, 'Go back; we will fulfill their covenant and seek God's help against them.'
