حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ حَدَّثَنِي سَعْدُ بْنُ طَارِقٍ عَنْ بِلَالِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنِ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَعْرَابِيٌّ

مَا أَخَافُ عَلَى قُرَيْشٍ إِلَّا أَنْفُسَهَا، قُلْتُ: مَا لَهُمْ؟ قَالَ: أَشِحَّةٌ نَحَرَةٌ، وَإِنْ طَالَ بِكَ عُمُرٌ لَتَنْظُرَنَّ إِلَيْهِمْ يَفْتِنُونَ النَّاسَ، حَتَّى تَرَى النَّاسَ بَيْنَهُمْ كَالْغَنَمِ بَيْنَ الْحَوْضَيْنِ، إِلَى هَذَا مَرَّةً وَإِلَى هَذَا مَرَّةً

✧ I do not fear for Quraysh except from themselves. I said: What is wrong with them? He said: They are greedy and fierce, and if you live long enough, you will see them causing tribulation among the people, until you see the people among them like sheep between two watering troughs—going to this one once, and to that one once.
