✧ He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—or he said: I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—when a man came to him and said: “Are you the Messenger of Allah?”—or he said: “Are you Muhammad?” He replied: “Yes.” He said: “To what do you call?” He said: “I call to Allah alone—the One who, when harm befalls you and you call upon Him, removes it from you; the One who, when a year of drought afflicts you and you call upon Him, makes [vegetation] grow for you; and the One who, when you are in a desolate land and lose your way and call upon Him, restores [your way] to you.” He said: The man embraced Islam, then said: “Instruct me, O Messenger of Allah.” He said to him: “Do not revile anyone”—or he said: “anything”—al-Hakam was uncertain. He said: “I have not reviled anything, neither a camel nor a sheep, since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed me. And do not disdain any act of kindness, even if it be meeting your brother with a cheerful face while you speak to him. And pour from your bucket into the vessel of one seeking water. And let your waist-wrapper reach halfway down your shin; if you refuse, then to the ankles. Beware of letting the waist-wrapper hang low, for that is pride, and Allah does not love pride.”
