حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ وَاضِحٍ وَهُوَ أَبُو تُمَيْلَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

رَأَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي يَدِ رَجُلٍ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ، فَقَالَ: مَا لَكَ وَلِحُلِيِّ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ ؟ قَالَ: فَجَاءَ وَقَدْ لَبِسَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ صُفْرٍ، فَقَالَ: أَجِدُ مِنْكَ رِيحَ أَهْلِ الْأَصْنَامِ، قَالَ: فَمِمَّ أَتَّخِذُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: مِنْ فِضَّةٍ

Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a gold ring on a man's hand and said: 'What is it with you and the ornaments of the people of Paradise?' He came back wearing a ring of brass, and he said: 'I smell the scent of the idolaters from you.' He said: 'Then from what should I make it, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'From silver.'
