✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ encamped at the fortress of the people of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the banner to Umar ibn al-Khattab, and those Muslims who went with him advanced. They met the people of Khaybar. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him.' When the next day came, he called Ali, who had sore eyes, spat into his eye, and gave him the banner. The people advanced with him, and he met the people of Khaybar. There was Marhab strutting in front of them, reciting: 'Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, armed with sharp weapons, a tried warrior; sometimes I thrust, and sometimes I strike, when lions advance in fury.' He and Ali exchanged two blows, and Ali struck him on the crown of his head until the sword bit into it and his molars clenched it. The people of the army heard the sound of his blow. The last of the people had not yet fully caught up with Ali before victory was granted to him and to them.
