✧ He passed by a gathering while they were speaking about ʿAlī [negatively]. He stopped at them and said: I had something in my heart against ʿAlī, and Khālid b. al-Walīd was likewise. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me in a military detachment over which ʿAlī was [in command], and we captured some captives. He said: ʿAlī took a slave girl from the fifth [of the spoils] for himself. Khālid b. al-Walīd said: That is for you. He said: When we came to the Prophet ﷺ, I began telling him what had happened. Then I said: ʿAlī took a slave girl from the fifth. He said: I was a man who was prone to bowing my head. He said: I raised my head, and the face of the Messenger of God ﷺ had changed. He said: Whoever I am his guardian, ʿAlī is his guardian.
