✧ On the authority of Sahl b. Sa'd al-Sa'idi, the Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ: Someone came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, "The Banu 'Amr b. 'Awf have fought one another and thrown stones at each other." So the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to them to reconcile between them, and the time for prayer came. Bilal came to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and said, "Will you lead the prayer, and I shall give the call to commence?" He said, "Yes." He said: Bilal gave the call to commence, and Abu Bakr stepped forward. When he had begun the prayer and the people had lined up behind him, the Messenger of God ﷺ came back from where he had gone and began threading through the rows until he reached the first row, then stood still. The people started clapping to alert Abu Bakr of the presence of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and Abu Bakr would not turn around during the prayer. When they persisted, he turned and saw the Messenger of God ﷺ behind him among the people. The Messenger of God ﷺ signaled to him to remain in place. Abu Bakr raised his hands as if supplicating, then stepped backward until he joined the row, and the Messenger of God ﷺ stepped forward and led the people in prayer. When he finished the prayer, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, "What is the matter with you? When something happened to you during the prayer, you began clapping. If something happens to one of you during the prayer, let him glorify God, for glorification is for men and clapping is for women." Then he said to Abu Bakr, "Why did you raise your hands? What prevented you from remaining in place when I signaled to you?" He replied, "I raised my hands because I praised God for what I saw of you, and it was not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of God in prayer."
