Translation

✧ I entered the mosque of Homs and sat in a circle in which there were thirty-two men from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. He said: one of them would say: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' and he would narrate. Then another would say: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' and he would narrate. He said: among them was a man with dark eyes and bright front teeth. When they were uncertain about something, they referred it to him and were satisfied with what he said about it. He said: I had never sat before or after in a gathering like it. The people dispersed, and I did not know the name of any one of them or his dwelling. He said: I spent a night unlike any night I had spent. He said: I said to myself: 'I am a man seeking knowledge, and I sat with the companions of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, yet I did not know the name of any one of them or his dwelling.' When morning came, I went early to the mosque, and there was the man to whom they referred when they were uncertain about something, praying toward one of the pillars of the mosque. I sat beside him. When he finished, I said: 'O servant of Allah, by Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah.' He took hold of my waist-wrapper until he brought me close to him, then said: 'Do you love me for the sake of Allah?' I said: 'Yes, by Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah.' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Those who love one another for the majesty of Allah will be in the shade of Allah and the shade of His Throne on a day when there is no shade except His shade.' He said: I got up from him, and there was a man from the people who had been with him. I said: 'A ḥadīth that the man narrated to me.' He said: 'Indeed, he will not tell you anything but the truth.' I informed him, and he said: 'I heard that, and something better than it. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrating from his Lord, blessed and exalted is He: "My love is due to those who love one another for My sake, and My love is due to those who give to one another for My sake, and My love is due to those who visit one another for My sake."' I said: 'Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you?' He said: 'I am ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit.' I said: 'Who is the man?' He said: 'Muʿādh b. Jabal.'
