✧ Abu Qatadah said: I saw two men fighting: a Muslim and a polytheist. Then a man from the polytheists wanted to help his polytheist companion against the Muslim, so I went to him and struck his hand, cutting it off. He grabbed me with his other hand, and by Allah, he did not let go of me until I sensed the smell of death. Had it not been that the blood weakened him, he would have killed me. He fell, so I struck him and killed him, but the fighting distracted me from him. A man from the people of Makkah passed by him and stripped him. When we finished and the war laid down its burdens, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever kills an enemy has his spoils.' He said: I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I killed a man who had spoils, but the fighting distracted me from him, and I do not know who stripped him.' A man from the people of Makkah said: 'He is truthful, O Messenger of Allah; I stripped him. Make him satisfied with me regarding his spoils.' He said: Abu Bakr said: 'You aim at a lion among Allah's lions who fights for Allah—Mighty and Majestic—to share his spoils? Return to him the spoils of his slain enemy.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'He is truthful. Return to him the spoils of his slain enemy.' Abu Qatadah said: I took it from him, sold it, and bought with its price a garden in Madinah. It was the first property I acquired.
