✧ My father, Qatadah al-Ansari

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ

كُنْتُ أَلْقَى مِنَ الرُّؤْيَا شِدَّةً، غَيْرَ أَنِّي لَا أُزَمَّلُ حَتَّى حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو قَتَادَةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: الرُّؤْيَا مِنَ اللهِ، وَالْحُلُمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، فَإِذَا حَلَمَ أَحَدُكُمْ حُلْمًا يَكْرَهُهُ، فَلْيَبْصُقْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلَاثَ بَصَقَاتٍ، وَلْيَسْتَعِذْ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَضُرُّهُ

Translation

✧ I used to suffer severe distress from dreams, except that I would not be wrapped up (in anxiety). Until Abu Qatadah told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “The true dream is from Allah, and the bad dream is from Shaytan. So if one of you has a dream that he dislikes, let him spit dryly to his left three times, and seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan, for it will not harm him.”
