✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out the army of commanders and said: 'Let Zayd b. Harithah be your commander. If Zayd is struck down, then Ja'far. If Ja'far is struck down, then Abdullah b. Rawahah al-Ansari.' Ja'far leapt up and said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, O Prophet of Allah, I never feared that you would appoint Zayd over me.' He said: 'Go forth, for you do not know which of these is best.' The army set out and remained as long as Allah willed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and ordered it to be announced: 'The prayer is to be gathered.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'News has come' – or 'news has returned'; Abd al-Rahman was unsure. 'Shall I not inform you about this army of yours that has gone out? They set out until they met the enemy. Zayd was struck down as a martyr, so seek forgiveness for him.' The people sought forgiveness for him. 'Then Ja'far b. Abi Talib took the banner and charged the people until he was killed as a martyr. I bear witness for him to martyrdom, so seek forgiveness for him.' Then Abdullah b. Rawahah took the banner and stood firm until he was struck down as a martyr, so seek forgiveness for him. Then Khalid b. al-Walid took the banner, though he was not one of the commanders; he appointed himself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his two fingers and said: 'O Allah, he is a sword of Your swords, so aid him.' Abd al-Rahman once said: 'So gain victory through him.' On that day Khalid was named the Sword of Allah. Then the Prophet ﷺ said: 'March out and reinforce your brothers, and let no one stay behind.' The people marched out in intense heat, on foot and mounted.
