✧ A thief was brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he confessed, but no goods were found with him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: I do not think you stole. He said: Yes—twice or three times. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Cut off his hand, then bring him to me. He said: So they cut it off, then brought him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: Say: I ask God's forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance. He said: I ask God's forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: O God, turn to him in mercy.

machine translationThere is weakness (ḍaʿf) in it, for this Abū al-Mundhir is unknown (majhūl); no one narrated from him except Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah.
machine translationAl-Khaṭṭābī mentioned that there is some criticism concerning its chain of transmission, and when a hadith is narrated by an unknown man (majhūl), it is not a proof and it is not obligatory to rule by it.
in مسند أحمد, p. 22885
