✧ I was with the Messenger of God ﷺ in the battle of Ḥunayn, and we traveled on a scorching, intensely hot day. We halted beneath the shade of trees. When the sun had passed its zenith, I put on my armor, mounted my horse, and went to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was in his tent. I said: 'Peace be upon you, O Messenger of God, and the mercy of God. It is time to depart.' He said: 'Yes.' Then he said: 'O Bilāl!' He sprang up from beneath a ṣamurah tree, his shadow like the shadow of a bird, and said: 'At your service, and at your pleasure, and I am your ransom.' He said: 'Saddle my horse for me.' So he brought out a saddle whose flaps were of palm fiber, with no pride or luxury in them. He said: So he saddled it. He said: Then he mounted and we mounted, and we faced them in the evening and through the night. The two cavalry forces sniffed at each other, and the Muslims turned in retreat, as God Almighty said. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'O servants of God, I am the servant of God and His Messenger.' Then he said: 'O company of the Muhājirūn, I am the servant of God and His Messenger.' He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ dismounted from his horse, took a handful of dust, and the one who was closest to him than I informed me that he threw it in their faces and said: 'May the faces be ugly!' And God Almighty routed them. Yaʿlā b. ʿAṭāʾ said: Their sons narrated to me from their fathers that they said: 'None of us remained but that his eyes and mouth were filled with dust, and we heard a clanging between heaven and earth like the passing of iron on an iron basin.'
