✧ I entered Paradise and heard a rustling sound ahead of me. I said: What is this? He said: It is Bilāl. Then I went on, and the majority of the people of Paradise were the poor emigrants and the children of the Muslims, and I saw no one fewer there than the rich and the women. It was said to me: As for the rich, they are here at the gate being called to account and purified; as for the women, the two red things distracted them: gold and silk. Then we went out through one of the eight gates of Paradise. When I was at the gate, a scale was brought and I was placed in one pan, and my community was placed in the other pan, and I outweighed them. Then Abū Bakr was brought and placed in one pan, and all of my community was brought and placed in the other pan, and Abū Bakr outweighed them. Then ʿUmar was brought and placed in one pan, and all of my community was brought and placed in the other, and ʿUmar outweighed them. Then my community was shown to me one by one, and they passed by. I wondered why ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf was late, but he came after I had given up hope. I said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān! He said: May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of God. By the One who sent you with the truth, I did not reach you until I thought I would never see you except after the hardships. He said: What is that? He said: Because of my abundant wealth, I am being called to account and purified.
