✧ We returned with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the expedition of Tabuk, and when I saw him alone, I said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me to Paradise." He said: "Excellent! You have asked about something great, yet it is easy for the one for whom Allah makes it easy. You establish the prescribed prayer, give the obligatory zakah, and meet Allah [Mighty and Majestic] without associating anything with Him. Shall I not tell you of the head of the matter, its pillar, and the peak of its hump? The head of the matter is Islam: whoever submits is safe. Its pillar is prayer, and the peak of its hump is striving in the path of Allah. Shall I not tell you of the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield, charity and a servant's standing in the depths of the night expiate sins," and he recited this verse: "Their sides forsake their beds, calling upon their Lord in fear and in hope, and from what We have provided them they spend." Then he said: "Shall I not tell you of what gives you mastery over all of that?" He said: Then a group of people approached, and I feared they would distract the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from me—Shu'bah said: "or words to that effect." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what about your saying: 'Shall I not tell you of what gives you mastery over all of that?'" He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed with his hand to his tongue. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will we be taken to account for what we say?" He said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu'adh! And do people ever get thrown on their faces into Hell except by the harvests of their tongues?"
