حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ عَدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو يَعْنِي الرَّقِّيَّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ حَدَّثَنَا جَبَلَةُ بْنُ سُحَيْمٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْمُثَنَّى الْعَبْدِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ السَّدُوسِيَّ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْخَصَاصِيَّةِ قَالَ
أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لِأُبَايِعَهُ قَالَ: فَاشْتَرَطَ عَلَيَّ شَهَادَةَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، وَأَنْ أُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةَ، وَأَنْ أُؤَدِّيَ الزَّكَاةَ، وَأَنْ أَحُجَّ حَجَّةَ الْإِسْلَامِ، وَأَنْ أَصُومَ شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ، وَأَنْ أُجَاهِدَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ. فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَمَّا اثْنَتَانِ فَوَاللهِ مَا أُطِيقُهُمَا: الْجِهَادُ وَالصَّدَقَةُ؛ فَإِنَّهُمْ زَعَمُوا أَنَّهُ مَنْ وَلَّى الدُّبُرَ فَقَدْ بَاءَ بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللهِ، فَأَخَافُ إِنْ حَضَرْتُ تِلْكَ جَشِعَتْ نَفْسِي وَكَرِهْتُ الْمَوْتَ. وَالصَّدَقَةُ، فَوَاللهِ مَا لِي إِلَّا غُنَيْمَةٌ وَعَشْرُ ذَوْدٍ، هُنَّ رَسَلُ أَهْلِي وَحَمُولَتُهُمْ. قَالَ: فَقَبَضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدَهُ ثُمَّ حَرَّكَ يَدَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ: فَلَا جِهَادَ وَلَا صَدَقَةَ، فَبِمَ تَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ إِذًا ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَنَا أُبَايِعُكَ. قَالَ: فَبَايَعْتُهُ عَلَيْهِنَّ كُلِّهِنَّ

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ to pledge allegiance to him. He said: “He stipulated upon me the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, that I establish the prayer, that I pay the zakah, that I perform the Hajj of Islam, that I fast the month of Ramadan, and that I strive in the path of Allah.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, as for two of them, by Allah, I cannot bear them: jihad and charity (sadaqah). For they claim that whoever turns his back has incurred wrath from Allah, and I fear that if I am present at that, my soul will become greedy and I will hate death. As for charity, by Allah, I have nothing but a small flock and ten she-camels; they are the milk supply of my family and their transport.” He said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ withdrew his hand, then moved his hand, then said: ‘Then no jihad and no charity—how will you enter Paradise then?’” He said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I pledge allegiance to you.’” He said: “So I pledged allegiance to him upon all of them.”
