Translation

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “The caliphate in my community is thirty years, then kingship after that.” Then he said to me, “Safīna, hold fast to the caliphate of Abū Bakr, the caliphate of ʿUmar, the caliphate of ʿUthmān, and hold fast to the caliphate of ʿAlī.” He said, “We found it thirty years.” Then I looked at the caliphs after that and did not find it agreed with them for thirty. I said to Saʿīd, “Where did you meet Safīna?” He said, “I met him in the valley of Nakhla in the time of al-Ḥajjāj. I stayed with him for eight nights asking him about the ḥadīths of the Messenger of God ﷺ.” He said, “I said to him, ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘I will not tell you; the Messenger of God ﷺ named me Safīna.’ I said, ‘Why did he name you Safīna (ship)?’ He said, ‘The Messenger of God ﷺ went out with his companions, and their belongings became heavy on them, so he said to me: Spread your cloak. So I spread it, and they put their belongings in it, then they loaded it on me. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: Carry it, for you are only a ship. If I had carried that day the load of a camel, or two, or three, or four, or five, or six, or seven, it would not have been heavy on me except that they were burdensome.””
