✧ The Prophet ﷺ rode a donkey with a packsaddle, under him a Fadak velvet cloth, and he mounted Usamah b. Zayd behind him. He was visiting Sa'd b. Ubadah in the Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj, and that was before the Battle of Badr. He passed by a gathering in which there were mixed groups of Muslims, polytheist idol-worshippers, and Jews, among them Abdullah b. Ubayy, and in the gathering was Abdullah b. Rawahah. When the dust of the animal covered the gathering, Abdullah b. Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak and said: 'Do not make dust on us.' The Prophet ﷺ greeted them, then stopped and dismounted. He called them to Allah and recited the Quran to them. Abdullah b. Ubayy said to him: 'O man, there is nothing better than this if what you say is true. Do not annoy us in our gatherings, and return to your mount. Whoever of us comes to you, narrate to him.' Abdullah b. Rawahah said: 'Come to us in our gatherings, for we love that.' He said: The Muslims, polytheists, and Jews insulted one another until they were about to jump at each other. The Prophet ﷺ kept calming them down, then he mounted his animal and entered upon Sa'd b. Ubadah. He said: 'O Sa'd, did you not hear what Abu Hubab said' — meaning Abdullah b. Ubayy — 'he said such-and-such?' He replied: 'Pardon him, O Messenger of Allah, and overlook. By Allah, Allah has given you what He has given you, and the people of this lake had agreed to crown him and tie a headband on him. When Allah rejected that with the truth He gave you, he choked on that, and so he did what you saw.' So the Prophet ﷺ pardoned him.
