✧ I was sitting beside the Prophet ﷺ one day when revelation came to him. He said: The tranquility overcame him, and his thigh fell upon my thigh when the tranquility overcame him. Zayd said: By God, I never found anything heavier than the thigh of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Then it was relieved from him, and he said: Write, O Zayd. So I took a shoulder blade, and he said: Write: The believers who stay behind, other than those who have an excuse, and those who strive are not equal. The entire verse up to His saying: a great reward. So I wrote that on a shoulder blade. When Ibn Umm Maktūm heard it—and he was a blind man—he stood up when he heard the merit of the strivers and said: O Messenger of God, what about those who are unable to strive, such as the blind and the like? Zayd said: By God, he had not finished his words—or it was only when he finished his words—the tranquility overcame the Prophet ﷺ, and his thigh fell upon my thigh, and I felt from its weight as I had felt the first time. Then it was relieved from him, and he said: Recite. So I recited to him: The believers who stay behind, other than those who have an excuse, and those who strive are not equal. The Prophet ﷺ said: other than those who have an excuse. [Zayd said:] So I appended it. By God, it is as if I am looking at its insertion at a crack that was in the shoulder blade.
