✧ I came to Ubayy b. Kaʿb and said to him: Something about divine decree has entered my mind, and I would like you to narrate a hadith to me in the hope that Allah may remove what I feel. He said: If Allah [Mighty and Majestic] were to punish the inhabitants of the heavens and the inhabitants of the earth, He would punish them without being unjust to them, and if He were to have mercy on them, His mercy would be better for them than their deeds. If you had gold equal to Mount Uḥud and spent it in the cause of Allah, then you did not believe in divine decree, and you did not know that what struck you could not have missed you and what missed you could not have struck you, it would not be accepted from you, and if you died upon other than that, you would enter the Fire. It will not harm you to meet my brother ʿAbd Allah b. Masʿūd and ask him. So he met ʿAbd Allah and said the like of that to him. Then he met Ḥudhayfah b. al-Yamān and said the like of that to him. Then he met Zayd b. Thābit and said the like of that to him, except that he narrated it to him from the Prophet of Allah ﷺ.
