✧ Ibn al-ʿĀṣ and Zayd b. Thābit were writing the muṣḥafs. They came upon this verse, and Zayd said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The old man and the old woman, when they commit adultery, stone them absolutely. ʿUmar said: When it was revealed, I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Write it down for me. Shuʿbah said: It was as if he disliked that. ʿUmar said: Do you not see that an old man, if he has not been married, is flogged, and that a young man, if he commits adultery and has been married, is stoned?
