✧ Zaid b. Thabit, from the Prophet ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سِنَانٍ سَعِيدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ عَنْ ابْنِ الدَّيْلَمِيِّ قَالَ

لَقِيتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ، إِنَّهُ قَدْ وَقَعَ فِي قَلْبِي شَيْءٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْقَدَرِ، فَحَدِّثْنِي بِشَيْءٍ لَعَلَّهُ يَذْهَبُ مِنْ قَلْبِي. قَالَ: لَوْ أَنَّ اللهَ عَذَّبَ أَهْلَ سَمَاوَاتِهِ وَأَهْلَ أَرْضِهِ، لَعَذَّبَهُمْ وَهُوَ غَيْرُ ظَالِمٍ لَهُمْ، وَلَوْ رَحِمَهُمْ كَانَتْ رَحْمَتُهُ لَهُمْ خَيْرًا مِنْ أَعْمَالِهِمْ، وَلَوْ أَنْفَقْتَ جَبَلَ أُحُدٍ [أَوْ مِثْلَ جَبَلِ أُحُدٍ] ذَهَبًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ [عَزَّ وَجَلَّ]، مَا قَبِلَهُ اللهُ مِنْكَ حَتَّى تُؤْمِنَ بِالْقَدَرِ، وَتَعْلَمَ أَنَّ مَا أَصَابَكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِيُخْطِئَكَ، وَمَا أَخْطَأَكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِيُصِيبَكَ، وَلَوْ مُتَّ عَلَى غَيْرِ ذَلِكَ لَدَخَلْتَ النَّارَ. قَالَ: فَأَتَيْتُ حُذَيْفَةَ فَقَالَ لِي مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، وَأَتَيْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ لِي مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، وَأَتَيْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ فَحَدَّثَنِي عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ

Translation

✧ I met Ubayy b. Kaʿb and said: O Abū al-Mundhir, something about this divine decree has fallen into my heart. So narrate to me something that may remove it from my heart. He said: If Allah were to punish the inhabitants of His heavens and the inhabitants of His earth, He would punish them without being unjust to them. And if He were to have mercy on them, His mercy would be better for them than their deeds. And if you were to spend the like of Mount Uḥud [or the like of Mount Uḥud] in gold in the path of Allah [Mighty and Majestic], Allah would not accept it from you until you believe in the divine decree and know that what has befallen you would never have missed you, and what has missed you would never have befallen you. And if you were to die upon other than that, you would enter the Fire. He said: Then I came to Ḥudhayfah, and he said the like of that to me. And I came to Ibn Masʿūd, and he said the like of that to me. And I came to Zayd b. Thābit, and he narrated to me from the Prophet ﷺ the like of that.
