✧ She set out to perform ʿumrah, and when she reached al-Rabadhah, she heard Abū Dharr saying: The Prophet ﷺ stood one night during the ʿishāʾ prayer and prayed with the people. Then some of his companions remained behind praying. When he saw their standing and their remaining behind, he went back to his dwelling. When he saw that the people had left the place, he returned to his place and prayed. Then I came and stood behind him. He gestured to me with his right hand, so I stood on his right. Then Ibn Masʿūd came and stood behind me and behind him. He gestured to him with his left hand, so he stood on his left. The three of us stood praying, each man of us by himself, reciting from the Qurʾān as much as God willed him to recite. Then he stood with one verse of the Qurʾān repeating it until he prayed the dawn prayer. After we woke in the morning, I gestured to ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd to ask him what he intended by what he did last night. Ibn Masʿūd said with his hand: I will not ask him about anything until he speaks to me. So I said: May my father and mother be your ransom, you stood with one verse of the Qurʾān while you have the Qurʾān with you?! If one of us did this, we would find fault with him! He said: I supplicated for my community. He said: So what were you answered? Or what was returned to you? He said: I was answered with that which, if many of them were to see it once, they would abandon the prayer. He said: Shall I not give glad tidings to the people? He said: Yes. So I set off hastening, about a stone's throw away, when ʿUmar said: O Messenger of God, if you send this to the people, they will fall short in worship. So he called to him: "Return." So he returned. And that verse was: 'If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, You are the Mighty, the Wise.'
