✧ I came to Madinah wanting the stipend from ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, and I sat in a circle among the circles of Quraysh. Then a man came wearing tattered clothes, having wrapped a garment around his head. He said: Give glad tidings to the hoarders of wealth of a branding on the foreheads, and a branding on the backs, and a branding on the sides. Then he withdrew to a pillar and prayed two rakʿahs behind it. I said: Who is this? It was said: This is Abū Dharr. I said to him: What is the thing I heard you calling out? He said: I did not say to them anything except something they heard from their Prophet ﷺ. I said to him: May God have mercy on you. I used to take the stipend from ʿUmar, so what do you think? He said: Take it, for in it today there is assistance, and it is about to become a debt. When it becomes a debt, then abandon it.
