✧ I said to Ubayy: Tell me about the Night of Decree, for Ibn Umm ʿAbd used to say, “Whoever stands in prayer the whole year will attain it.” He said: May God have mercy on Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. He knew that it is in Ramadan and that it is on the twenty-seventh, but he concealed it from the people so that they would not rely on it. By the One who sent down the Book upon Muhammad, it is in Ramadan, on the night of the twenty-seventh. I said: O Abū al-Mundhir, how did you know it? He said: By the sign which the Messenger of God ﷺ told us. We counted and memorized. By God, it is indeed that—without exception. I said to Zirr: What is the sign? He said: The sun rises on that morning like a basin, without rays.
