✧ I recited a verse, and Ibn Mas'ud recited it differently, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Did you not teach me to recite such-and-such a verse? He said: Yes. Then Ibn Mas'ud said: Did you not teach me to recite it such-and-such? He said: Yes. Both of you are good and do well. He said: Then I said to him: He struck my chest, and he said: O Ubayy b. Ka'b, the Quran was recited to me, and it was said to me: Upon one harf or upon two harfs? He said: The angel who was with me said: Upon two harfs. So I said: Upon two harfs? He said: Upon two harfs or three? The angel who was with me said: Upon three. So I said: Upon three, until it reached seven ahruf, of which there is none except that it is sufficient and healing. If you say: Ghafuran Rahiman (Forgiving, Merciful), or you say: Sami'an 'Aliman (Hearing, Knowing), or 'Aliman Sami'an (Knowing, Hearing), then God is thus as long as you do not conclude a verse of punishment with mercy, or a verse of mercy with punishment.
