✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ taught me a verse, and another man was taught it in a recitation different from Ubayy's. I said: 'Who taught you that?' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ taught it to me.' I said: 'By God, he taught it to me as such-and-such.' Ubayy said: Nothing crept into my soul about Islam like what crept into it that day. So I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of God, did you not teach me such-and-such a verse?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then this man claims that you taught it to him as such-and-such.' He struck his hand on my chest, and that doubt disappeared; I felt nothing of it afterward. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Jibrīl and Mīkāʾīl (peace be upon them both) came to me. Jibrīl said: Recite the Qur'an in one mode. Mīkāʾīl said: Ask for more. He said: Recite it in two modes. He said: Ask for more, until it reached seven modes. He said: Each is sufficient and complete.'
