حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ قَالَ
أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ قَصِيرٍ أَشْعَثَ ذِي عَضَلَاتٍ عَلَيْهِ إِزَارٌ وَقَدْ زَنَى فَرَدَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِهِ فَرُجِمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كُلَّمَا نَفَرْنَا غَازِينَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ تَخَلَّفَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَهُ نَبِيبٌ كَنَبِيبِ التَّيْسِ يَمْنَحُ إِحْدَاهُنَّ الْكُثْبَةَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُمَكِّنُنِي مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا جَعَلْتُهُ نَكَالًا أَوْ نَكَّلْتُهُ
Translation

✧ A short, disheveled, muscular man wearing a waist-wrap was brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he had committed adultery. He (the Prophet) turned him away twice, then ordered that he be stoned. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Whenever we set out as raiders in the path of God, one of them stays behind, bleating like a billy goat, giving one of those women a small amount of milk. God will not enable me to catch any of them except that I will make an example of him or punish him severely.'
