✧ We set out early one year, then returned, and among us was an old man from Khathaam. Al-Hajjaj was mentioned, and he fell to criticizing him and reviling him. So I said to him: 'Why do you revile him when he is fighting the people of Iraq in obedience to the Commander of the Believers?' He said: 'He is the one who made them disbelievers.' Then he said: 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "There will be in this nation five tribulations. Four have passed, and one remains, and it is the Ṣaylam. It is among you, O people of Syria. If you live to see it, then if you are able to be a stone, be one, and do not be with either of the two factions. Indeed, take a tunnel in the ground."'
