✧ He saw [the Messenger of God] ﷺ at al-Baqīʿ while he was saying: 'Whoever gives charity, I will bear witness for him on the Day of Resurrection.' He said: 'So I loosened my turban, a fold or two folds, intending to give them as charity, but what befalls the children of Adam overtook me, so I retied my turban. Then a man came — I had never seen at al-Baqīʿ a man darker, shorter, or more compact in build, driving a she-camel the like of which I had never seen at al-Baqīʿ — and said: "O Messenger of God, is this charity?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Take this she-camel." He said: A man rebuked him and said: "This one gives this as charity! By God, it is better than him." He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ heard it and said: "You have lied. Rather, he is better than you and than it," three times. Then he said: "Woe to the owners of hundreds of camels," three times. They said: "Except whom, O Messenger of God?" He said: "Except the one who says about wealth, thus and thus, and gathers between his palms to his right and to his left." Then he said: "The abstinent one who strives has succeeded," three times — the abstinent in worldly living, the striver in worship.
