✧ We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ on one of his journeys. The people halted at a stopping place, and the Prophet ﷺ halted in the shade of a large tree. He saw me coming from an errand, and there was no one else except him and his scribe. He said: 'Shall I record you, O Ibn Hawala?' I said: 'For what, O Messenger of God?' He turned away from me and faced the scribe. He said: Then I came closer than that. He said: 'Shall I record you, O Ibn Hawala?' I said: 'For what, O Messenger of God?' He turned away from me and faced the scribe. He said: Then I came and stood over them, and there at the top of the document were Abu Bakr and 'Umar. I thought they would only be recorded for good. He said: 'Shall I record you, O Ibn Hawala?' I said: 'Yes, O Prophet of God.' He said: 'O Ibn Hawala, what will you do in a trial that surges in the regions of the earth like the horns of cattle?' I said: 'What shall I do, O Messenger of God?' He said: 'Upon you is Syria.' Then he said: 'What will you do in a trial in which the first is like the start of a hare?' He said: I do not know what he said about the last. And to have known what he said about the last would be dearer to me than such and such.
