✧ We set out as pilgrims on the nights when Yazīd b. al-Muhallab had come out. It had been mentioned to us that there was water in al-ʿĀliya called al-Zujayj. When we had completed our rites, we came until we reached al-Zujayj and made our mounts kneel. He said: We went on until we came to a well where elderly men with dyed beards were conversing. We said, “This one who accompanied the Messenger of God ﷺ, where is his house?” They said, “Yes, he accompanied him, and that is his house.” We went until we came to the house and greeted. He said: He gave us permission, and there was an old man lying down called al-ʿAddāʾ b. Khālid al-Kilābī. We said, “Are you the one who accompanied the Messenger of God ﷺ?” He said, “Yes, and were it not night I would read to you the letter of the Messenger of God ﷺ to me.” He said, “Who are you?” We said, “From the people of Basra.” He said, “Welcome to you. What has Yazīd b. al-Muhallab done?” We said, “He is there calling to the Book of God, Blessed and Exalted, and to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.” He said, “What is he of that? What is he of that?” He said: I said, “Which should we follow, these or those?” meaning the people of Syria or Yazīd. He said, “If you stay put you will succeed and be guided; if you stay put you will succeed and be guided.” I think he said it three times. “I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of ʿArafa standing in the stirrups calling at the top of his voice: ‘O people, what day is this day of yours?’ They said, ‘God and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘What month is this month of yours?’ They said, ‘God and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘What land is this land of yours?’ They said, ‘God and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘Your day is a sacred day, your month is a sacred month, and your land is a sacred land.’” He said: Then he said, “Indeed, your blood and your wealth are forbidden to you as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours, until the day you meet your Lord [Blessed and Exalted], and He will ask you about your deeds.” He said: Then he raised his hands to the sky and said, “O God, bear witness against them; O God, bear witness against them.”
