✧ We were at a watering place, and riders—and Ismāʿīl once said: people—would pass by us returning from the Messenger of God ﷺ. I would draw near to them and listen until I had memorized Qurʾān. The people were waiting for the conquest of Makkah to accept Islam, so when it was conquered, a man would come to him and say, “O Messenger of God, I am the delegate of Banū so-and-so and I have brought you their Islam.” My father set out with the Islam of his people and returned to them and said, “The Messenger of God ﷺ said, ‘Put forward the one among you who knows the most Qurʾān.’” He said: They looked, and I was in a large encampment, and they found no one among them who knew more Qurʾān than I, so they put me forward while I was a boy. I led them in prayer wearing a burdah, and whenever I bowed or prostrated it would ride up and my private area would show. When we had prayed, an old woman of ours, a follower of the old religion, said, “Cover from us the backside of your reciter.” He said: So they cut a shirt for me. He mentioned that he rejoiced over it greatly.

machine translationHe used to consider the case of ʿAmr b. Salamah weak (ḍaʿīf), and once he said: "Leave him, he is nothing (laysa bi-shayʾ)"; it is clear.
