✧ Al-ʿAḍbāʾ belonged to a man from Banū ʿUqayl, and it was among the leading camels of the pilgrims. The man was taken captive, and al-ʿAḍbāʾ was taken with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by him while he was in bonds, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a donkey with a velvet cloth. He said: "O Muhammad, you take me and you take the leading camel of the pilgrims?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We take you for the crime of your allies, Thaqīf." Thaqīf had captured two men from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. And he said, among what he said: "I am a Muslim." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If you had said it while you had control of your affair, you would have attained every success." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on. He said: "O Muhammad, I am hungry, so feed me, and I am thirsty, so give me water." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This is your need." Then he was ransomed for the two men, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept al-ʿAḍbāʾ for his riding. Then the polytheists raided the pasturing camels of Madinah and took them, and al-ʿAḍbāʾ was among them. They also captured a Muslim woman. When they camped, they rested their camels in their courtyards. One night, after they had gone to sleep, the woman got up and every camel she approached bellowed until she came to al-ʿAḍbāʾ, a docile camel with a bell, so she rode it and headed toward Madinah. She vowed that if Allah [Mighty and Majestic be He] saved her on it, she would slaughter it. When she arrived in Madinah, the camel was recognized, and it was said: "The she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The Prophet ﷺ was informed of her vow, or she came to him and told him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What a bad way she has repaid it," or "what a bad way you have repaid it, if Allah [Blessed and Exalted be He] saved her on it, she would slaughter it." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No fulfillment of a vow in disobedience to Allah, nor in what a son of Adam does not own."
