✧ I entered with my father upon Abu Barzah al-Aslami, and at that time I had two earrings in my ears. He said: I was a boy. Abu Barzah said: I praise God that I have become one who blames this clan of Quraysh. So-and-so is here fighting for this world, and so-and-so is here fighting for this world—meaning ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwan. Then he mentioned Ibn al-Azraq. Then he said: The people dearest to me are this matted-haired band, whose bellies are lean from the wealth of the Muslims and whose backs are light from their blood. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: The rulers are from Quraysh, the rulers are from Quraysh, the rulers are from Quraysh. I have a right over them and they have a right over you, as long as they do three things: when they judge, they are just; when they are asked for mercy, they show mercy; and when they make a covenant, they fulfill it. Whoever of them does not do that, upon him is the curse of God, the angels, and all people.
