✧ We returned with Abū Mūsā from Isfahan, and we hurried ahead. A camel-litter arrived, and Abū Mūsā said: 'Is there not a young man to help down his daughter-in-law?' He meant the slave woman of al-Ashʿarī. I said: 'Yes,' so I brought her near a tree and helped her down. Then I came and sat with the people. He said: 'Shall I not tell you a hadith that the Messenger of God ﷺ used to tell us?' We said: 'Yes, may God have mercy on you.' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ used to tell us that before the Hour there will be al-harj.' It was asked: 'What is al-harj?' He said: 'Lying and killing.' They said: 'More than we kill now?' He said: 'It is not your killing of the disbelievers, but rather killing one another, until a man kills his neighbor, kills his brother, kills his paternal uncle, and kills his cousin.' They said: 'Glory be to God! Will we still have our minds?' He said: 'No. Indeed, the minds of the people of that time will be taken away, until one of you thinks he is upon something when he is upon nothing. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I feared that these matters might reach me and you, and I find no way out for me and you from them in what our Prophet ﷺ entrusted to us except that we come out of them as we entered them, without having introduced anything into them.'
