✧ The cavalry of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came—or he said: the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—while I was at 'Aqrab. They seized my paternal aunt and some people. He said: When they brought them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: They were lined up before him. She said: O Messenger of Allah, the envoy has gone far, the children are cut off, and I am an old woman with no service to offer, so show me kindness, may Allah show you kindness. He said: Who is your envoy? She said: 'Adi b. Hatim. He said: The one who fled from Allah [Mighty and Majestic] and His Messenger. She said: So he showed me kindness. She said: When he returned, and a man beside him whom we think was 'Ali said: Ask him for a mount. So she asked him, and he ordered it for her. She said: He came to me, and she said: You have done a deed that your father would not have done. She said: Go to him, whether desirous or fearful, for so-and-so went to him and obtained from him, and so-and-so went to him and obtained from him. He said: So I came to him, and there was with him a woman and children or a child. He mentioned their closeness to the Prophet ﷺ, so I knew that it was not the kingdom of Chosroes or Caesar. He said to him: O 'Adi b. Hatim, what made you flee from it being said: 'There is no god but Allah'? Is there any god other than Allah? What made you flee from it being said: 'Allah is greater'? Is there anything greater than Allah, Mighty and Majestic? He said: So I embraced Islam, and I saw his face rejoice. And he said: Those upon whom is wrath are the Jews, and those who are astray are the Christians. Then they asked him, and he praised Allah and extolled Him. Then he said: To proceed, O people, it is for you to give from surplus. A man gave a sa', or part of a sa', or a handful, or part of a handful. Shu'ba said: To the best of my knowledge, he said: A date, or half a date. One of you will meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and He will say: What shall I say? Did I not make you hearing and seeing? Did I not give you wealth and children? What have you sent forth? Then he looks before him, behind him, to his right, and to his left, and finds nothing. So he has nothing to shield him from the Fire except his face. Therefore, guard yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date. If you cannot find that, then with a gentle word. I do not fear poverty for you. Allah, Exalted is He, will certainly aid you and give you, or He will open for you, until a woman travels between al-Hirah and Yathrib, and her greatest fear is theft for her palanquin.
