✧ We halted with the Messenger of God ﷺ in a valley called Wādī Khumm. He ordered the prayer and prayed it at the time of intense midday heat. He then gave us a sermon. A cloth was spread as shade for the Messenger of God ﷺ over a samurah tree from the sun. He said: “Do you not know—or: Do you not testify—that I have a greater claim over every believer than his own self?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “So whoever's mawlā I am, ʿAlī is his mawlā. [O God, be an enemy to him who is his enemy, and be a friend to him who is his friend.]”
