War has consumed them. What harm would it do them if they left me alone with the rest of the people? If they overcome me, then that is what they wanted. If Allah grants me victory over them, they would enter Islam while still numerous. If they do not, they would fight while they have strength. What do Quraysh think? By Allah, I will not cease striving against them for that with which Allah sent me until Allah makes it prevail or this neck is severed." Then he ordered the people, and they took a path to the right through the salt-marsh vegetation on a road that would bring him out at the Thaniyyat al-Mirar pass and al-Hudaybiyah below Makkah. He said: "So he led the army along that road. When the Quraysh cavalry saw the dust of the army and realized they had diverted from their usual route, they retreated back to Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on until when he ascended Thaniyyat al-Mirar, his she-camel knelt down. The people said: 'She has balked.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'She has not balked, and it is not her nature. But the One who restrained the elephant from Makkah has restrained her. By Allah, Quraysh will not ask me today for any plan in which they seek ties of kinship but that I will grant it to them.' Then he said to the people: 'Dismount.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, there is no water in the valley for the people to camp by.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took an arrow from his quiver and gave it to a man from his companions. He went down into one of those wells and planted it in it, and water gushed forth abundantly until the people drew from it to their fill. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had settled, Budayl b. Warqa' came with men from Khuza'ah. He said to them something like what he said to Bishr b. Sufyan. They returned to Quraysh and said: 'O Quraysh, you are being hasty against Muhammad. Muhammad did not come to fight; he has come only as a visitor to this House, honoring its sanctity.' So they accused them. Muhammad — meaning Ibn Ishaq — said: Al-Zuhri said: "Khuza'ah, both its Muslims and its polytheists, were the confidants of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; they did not conceal anything that happened in Makkah from him." They said: 'Even if he came only for that, no, by Allah, he will never enter it against us by force, nor will the Arabs speak of that.' Then they sent Mikraz b. Hafs b. al-Akhyaf, one of the Banu Amir b. Lu'ayy, to him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said: 'This is a treacherous man.' When he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to him in a manner similar to what he had said to his companions. Then he returned to Quraysh and told them what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said to him. He said: "Then they sent al-Hulays b. 'Alqamah al-Kinani, who was then the chief of the Ahabish. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said: 'This is from a people who worship Allah devotedly. Send the sacrificial animals in his direction.' So they sent the sacrificial animals. When he saw the sacrificial animals streaming toward him from the side of the valley with their garlands, their hair worn away from being kept long from their place of sacrifice, he turned back and did not reach the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, out of reverence for what he saw. He said: 'O Quraysh, I have seen what it is not lawful to obstruct: the sacrificial animals with their garlands, their hair worn away from being kept long from their place of sacrifice.' They said: 'Sit down. You are only a Bedouin with no knowledge.' Then they sent 'Urwah b. Mas'ud al-Thaqafi. He said: 'O Quraysh, I have seen the harshness and bad language you give to those you send to Muhammad when they come to you. You know that I am a father and I am a son, and I have heard of the affliction that has befallen you. So I gathered those of my people who obey me and came to support you with myself.' They said: 'You have spoken truly; you are not suspected among us.' So he went out until he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat before him. He said: 'O Muhammad, you have gathered the riffraff of the people and brought them against your people to destroy them. These are Quraysh who have come out with their nursing camels and their young, wearing leopard skins, pledging by Allah that you will never enter it against them by force. By Allah, it is as if I see these people dispersing from you tomorrow.' He said: "Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ؓ was sitting behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'Suck the clitoris of al-Lat! Would we disperse from him?' He said: 'Who is this, O Muhammad?' He said: 'This is the son of Abu Quhafah.' He said: 'By Allah, were it not for a favor you did me, I would have repaid you for it. But this is for that.' Then he reached for the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah was standing at the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in armor. He struck his hand and said: 'Keep your hand from the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before, by Allah, it does not reach you again.' He said: 'Woe to you! How harsh and rough you are!' He said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled. He said: 'Who is this, O Muhammad?' He said: 'This is your nephew, al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah.' He said: 'O treacherous one! Did you not wash your shame only yesterday?' He said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to him with words similar to what he had said to his companions, informing him that he had not come seeking war. He said: "He rose from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ having seen how his companions treated him: he did not perform ablution but they rushed for the water; he did not spit but they rushed for it; nothing fell from his hair but they took it. He returned to Quraysh and said: 'O Quraysh, I have been to Khosrow in his kingdom, and I have been to Caesar and the Negus in their kingdoms. By Allah, I have never seen a king among his companions like Muhammad. I have seen a people who will never surrender him for anything. So consider your opinion.'" He said: "Before that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent Khirash b. Umayyah al-Khuza'i to Makkah and mounted him on a camel of his called al-Tha'lab. When he entered Makkah, Quraysh hamstrung it and wanted to kill Khirash, but the Ahabish prevented them until he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he called Umar to send him to Makkah, and Umar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I fear Quraysh for myself, and there is no one from Banu 'Adiyy in it to protect me. Quraysh knows my enmity toward them and my harshness against them. But I will guide you to a man who is mightier than I: Uthman b. Affan.' He said: "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and sent him to Quraysh to inform them that he had not come for war and that he had come as a visitor to this House, honoring its sanctity. Uthman went out until he reached Makkah. Aban b. Sa'id b. al-'As met him, dismounted from his mount, seated him before him, rode behind him, and granted him protection until he delivered the message of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Uthman went on until he came to Abu Sufyan and the leaders of Quraysh and conveyed to them what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent him with. They said to Uthman: 'If you wish to circumambulate the House, then do so.' He said: 'I will not do so until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulates it.' He said: "Quraysh detained him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims learned that Uthman had been killed." Muhammad said: "Al-Zuhri narrated to me that Quraysh sent Suhayl b. 'Amr, one of the Banu 'Amir b. Lu'ayy, and said: 'Go to Muhammad and make peace with him. The only condition in his peace should be that he returns from us this year. For by Allah, the Arabs will never say that he entered it against us by force.' So Suhayl b. 'Amr came to him. When the Prophet ﷺ saw him, he said: 'The people have wanted peace when they sent this man.' When he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they spoke and prolonged the discussion and negotiated until peace was concluded between them. When the matter was settled and nothing remained but the writing, Umar b. al-Khattab jumped up and went to Abu Bakr and said: 'O Abu Bakr, is he not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Are we not Muslims? Are they not polytheists?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then why do we accept humiliation in our religion?' Abu Bakr said: 'O Umar, adhere to his stirrup wherever he is. For I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah.' Umar said: 'And I bear witness.' Then he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, are we not Muslims? Are they not polytheists?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then why do we accept humiliation in our religion?' He said: 'I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I will not disobey His command, and He will not let me perish.' Then Umar said: 'I continued to fast, give charity, pray, and free slaves because of what I had done, out of fear of the words I had spoken that day, until I hoped it would be good.' He said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Ali b. Abi Talib and said to him: 'Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' Suhayl b. 'Amr said: 'I do not recognize this. But write: In Your name, O Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'Write: In Your name, O Allah. This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon with Suhayl b. 'Amr.' Suhayl said: 'If I bore witness that you are the Messenger of Allah, I would not fight you. But write: This is what Muhammad b. 'Abdullah and Suhayl b. 'Amr have agreed upon: to lay down war for ten years, during which people will be safe and refrain from one another, on condition that whoever comes to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from his companions without his guardian's permission, he will return him to them; and whoever comes to Quraysh from those with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they will not return him to him; and that between us is a sealed trust, and that there is no treachery or theft. And it was in their conditions when they wrote the document that whoever wished to enter into the pact and covenant of Muhammad entered into it, and whoever wished to enter into the pact and covenant of Quraysh entered into it. Then Khuza'ah leaped up and said: 'We are with the pact and covenant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' And Banu Bakr leaped up and said: 'We are with the pact and covenant of Quraysh.' And that you will return from us this year and not enter Makkah against us. And that when next year comes, we will leave it for you, and you will enter it with your companions and stay there three days, with you the weapons of the rider, not entering it except with swords in sheaths. While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was writing the document, Abu Jandal b. Suhayl b. 'Amr came to him in chains, having escaped to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had set out not doubting victory because of a dream the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had seen. When they saw the peace and the return and what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken upon himself, a great distress entered the people, to the point that they almost perished. When Suhayl saw Abu Jandal, he stood up to him and struck his face, then said: 'O Muhammad, the matter has been settled between me and you before this one came to you.' He said: 'You have spoken truly.' He stood up to him and seized him by the front of his garment. He said: "Abu Jandal cried out at the top of his voice: 'O assembly of Muslims, will you return me to the people of polytheism so that they will tempt me away from my religion?' He said: "The people's distress increased beyond what they already had. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Abu Jandal, be patient and seek reward, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will make for you and for the weak among you a way out and an escape. We have made a peace treaty between us and the people, and we gave them our word on that and they gave us their covenant on it. We will not betray them.' He said: "Umar b. al-Khattab leaped up with Abu Jandal and walked beside him, saying: 'Be patient, Abu Jandal, for they are only polytheists, and the blood of one of them is like the blood of a dog.' He said: "He brought the hilt of his sword close to him, saying: 'I hoped he would take the sword and strike his father with it.' He said: "But the man was reluctant regarding his father, and the matter was concluded. When they finished the document, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying in the sanctuary while he was encamped outside it, he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said: 'O people, slaughter and shave your heads.' He said: "No one stood. Then he repeated it, and no man stood. Then he repeated it again, and no man stood. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went back and entered upon Umm Salamah and said: 'O Umm Salamah, what is wrong with the people?' She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what you have seen has entered them. Do not speak to any of them. Go to your sacrificial animal wherever it is, slaughter it, and shave. If you do that, the people will do it.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out without speaking to anyone until he came to his sacrificial animal and slaughtered it. Then he sat and shaved. The people arose, slaughtering and shaving. He said: "Until when he was between Makkah and Madinah in the middle of the road, Surat al-Fath was revealed.
