حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَي عَنْ سُفْيَانَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو إِسْحَاقَعَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ

قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ: يَا أَبَا عُمَارَةَ، أَوَلَّيْتُمْ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ ؟ قَالَ: لَا وَاللهِ، مَا وَلَّى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، وَلَكِنْ وَلَّى سَرَعَانُ النَّاسِ، تَلَقَّتْهُمْ هَوَازِنُ بِالنَّبْلِ، وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ بَيْضَاءَ وَأَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ آخِذٌ بِلِجَامِهَا، وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: أَنَا النَّبِيُّ لَا كَذِبْ أَنَا ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبْ.

Translation

✧ A man said to him: 'O Abu 'Umarah, did you turn back on the day of Hunayn?' He said: 'No, by Allah, the Prophet ﷺ did not turn back, but the swift among the people turned back. Hawazin met them with arrows, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a white mule, with Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith holding its bridle, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was saying: I am the Prophet, no lie; I am the son of 'Abd al-Muttalib.'
