✧ Indeed, when the believer is facing the Hereafter and departing from the world, angels descend to him with faces as if the sun were upon them, each one carrying a shroud and embalming perfume. They sit from him at a distance as far as the eye can see until his soul departs. Then every angel between heaven and earth and every angel in heaven prays for him, and the gates of heaven are opened for him; there is no gate but its inhabitants supplicate God that his soul be taken up through them. When his soul is taken up, they say: 'Lord, Your servant so-and-so.' He says: 'Return him, for I have promised them that from it I created them, into it I return them, and from it I bring them out another time.' He hears the sound of his companions' sandals when they turn away from him. Then a visitor comes to him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet?' He says: 'My Lord is God, my religion is Islam, and my prophet is Muhammad ﷺ.' He rebukes him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet?'—and that is the last trial presented to the believer; that is when God, Mighty and Majestic, says: 'God makes firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.' He says: 'My Lord is God, my religion is Islam, and my prophet is Muhammad ﷺ.' He says to him: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then a visitor comes to him with a handsome face, pleasant fragrance, and good garments, and says: 'Rejoice in honor from God and everlasting bliss.' He says: 'And you, may God give you glad tidings of good—who are you?' He says: 'I am your righteous deeds. By God, you were quick in obedience to God and slow to disobey God, so may God reward you well.' Then a gate of Paradise and a gate of the Fire are opened for him, and it is said: 'This would have been your abode had you disobeyed God; God has given you this in exchange.' When he sees what is in Paradise, he says: 'Lord, hasten the coming of the Hour so that I may return to my family and property.' It is said to him: 'Rest.' And indeed, when the disbeliever is departing from the world and facing the Hereafter, harsh and severe angels descend upon him, and they extract his soul as a many-pronged skewer is pulled from wet wool, and his soul is drawn out with his veins. Every angel between heaven and earth and every angel in heaven curses him, and the gates of heaven are closed; there is no gate but its inhabitants supplicate God that his soul not be taken up through them. When his soul is taken up, they say: 'Lord, so-and-so is Your servant.' He says: 'Return him, for I have promised them that from it I created them, into it I return them, and from it I bring them out another time.' He hears the sound of his companions' sandals when they turn away from him. Then a visitor comes to him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet?' He says: 'I do not know.' He says: 'May you not know and may you not recite.' Then a visitor comes to him with an ugly face, ugly garments, and a foul odor, and says: 'Rejoice in humiliation from God and everlasting punishment.' He says: 'And you, may God give you glad tidings of evil—who are you?' He says: 'I am your wicked deeds. You were slow to obey God and quick to disobey God, so may God reward you with evil.' Then a blind, deaf, and mute one is appointed for him, holding a sledgehammer; if a mountain were struck with it, it would turn to dust. He strikes him once until he becomes dust, then God restores him as he was, and he strikes him another time, and he lets out a cry that everything hears except the two heavy species, jinn and mankind. Al-Bara b. ʿĀzib said: Then a gate of the Fire is opened for him, and a bed of the Fire is spread for him.
