✧ When a man among the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ was fasting and the time to break the fast came, if he slept before breaking his fast he would not eat that night or the next day until evening. A certain man of the Anṣār was fasting, and when the time to break the fast came he went to his wife and said: “Do you have any food?” She said: “No, but I will go and seek some for you.” Sleep overcame him, and when his wife came and saw him, she said: “Deprivation for you.” He woke in the morning, and when midday came he fainted. That was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, and this verse was revealed: “It has been made lawful for you, on the night of the fast, to approach your wives” up to His saying: “until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread” [Q 2:187].
